American Hero, Louis Zamperini, is Coming to St. Andrew’s!

May 18, 2011 3 Comments Share

We welcome Louis Zamperini, American Hero from bestselling book, Unbroken, to take part in 3 Sunday worship services on Memorial Weekend, May 29 at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:11 a.m., where he will share about his life story of unbelievable perseverance and grace.

Louis Zamperini is a former American Olympic distance runner, World War II prisoner of war survivor, and inspirational speaker. On May 27, 1943, two years after enlisting in the US Air Force, his plane crashed into the ocean. After drifting 2000 miles in 47 days aboard his life raft, he entered into Japanese controlled waters. His rescuers would be his torturers. While in a series of prison camps for the next two years, Japanese prison guards tried to break his spirit with verbal and physical cruelty, but Louis outlasted them. After the war, Louis attended an Evangelist Billy Graham crusade, which helped him change his life for good. Louis decided to become a missionary to Japan, preaching the Gospel of forgiveness to the very guards who had tormented him during the war. Richard Kannwischer states, “I can’t wait to meet Louis Zamperini. He is a hero in the deepest sense of the word, not only because of his military duty, but his humility and ability to forgive.”

Why should anyone be interested in hearing Louis Zamperini share his story? Richard Kannwischer states, “We live in a time when we don’t know the stories of those who’ve gone before us. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience grace from an incredible man, rather than just learn about it.” His visit comes at the perfect time, not only because of Memorial Weekend, but because his story ties in to the current sermon series. Pastor Kannwischer states, “We are currently going through a study of Ephesians, and the weekend Louis is here, we will focus on the 3rd chapter. In this chapter, Paul, the author of Ephesians, talks about real power available to you and me. But what is real power? I invite you to come and find out!”

Louis Zamperini will be at the 8:00, 9:30, and 11:11 a.m. services on May 29.

I am so totally stoked!!! My book club just finished reading this book and I loved it! Louis incredible spirit and God’s divine grace makes it a thrill ride from the first page. I think I have told just about anyone who will listen to me that they should read it. It should also be required reading for all High School kids based on the history alone. Such a well written and amazing story of perseverance!!! Cannot wait to hear him 🙂

The chance to hear this man should not be missed. His history is awe-inspiring, not only for what he endured during and after the war but for how he transcended all the afflictions he faced. Try to read the book before you see him.

    Dear Rich:
Thank you for your inspiration from the story of Louis Zamperini. I was riveted to his book and his story from page one. My 94 year old dad is a World War II veteran and I know what treasures these men and women are to us today.
We will not have the privilege of hearing their story firsthand much longer. I would not miss this opportunity and have invited several people who do not attend St. Andrew’s, but are part of my “Let’s exchange our books” Club.
You are wonderful and bring such vitality to our church. I don’t stop at the door but would like to say thank you every day that you open your mouth to preach. God was gracious to call you our way. Blessings to you and see you on Sunday
