Warm Blanket Moments

“Please accept my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have everything I want.” Genesis 33:11 (NRSV)

In her book, Sacred Stories of Ordinary Families, Diana Garland tells the stories of ordinary people who trusted God and were willing to live their lives “inside-out” so that others would see the activity of God in their daily lives and desire a lifestyle that only God can offer.

She tells the story of a family that has found a way to live “inside-out” giving them a sense of identity that runs more deeply than the daily squabbles and conflicts which exist in their family, as with most families.  “They keep a stack of army blankets in the back of their SUV in the wintertime.  On cold nights, the father and the teenage boys drive the streets, giving blankets to homeless persons to keep them warm.  The image of the warm blanket serves not only to describe their relationships with one another but also one of the ways they seek to care for others beyond their own boundaries.”

What “warm blanket” moments do you have in your home that give meaning and purpose to life?  Are you willing to share those stories with others in our St. Andrew’s family so that others may be encouraged?  Are you able, like Jacob, to give freely of yourself and your resources saying in all confidence, “God has dealt graciously with me and I have everything I want?”

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”  James 4:10

PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I offer my gifts and talents to others because I have learned, along with Jacob, that you have dealt graciously with me and I have everything I want.  Amen.

Are you willing to share “warm blanket moments” with others today?
