School is back! St. Andrew’s believes that schools play a significant role in the development of healthy communities and individuals. For this reason, we have partnered with Whittier Elementary School, which serves the largely Hispanic community of west-side Costa Mesa. By investing our time and energy, we believe Whittier students will be given the best chance to reach their full potential, specifically to be able to read at grade level. To accomplish this, we serve in the following areas: literacy, staff encouragement, parental engagement and facility improvement.
We rely heavily on our the lay leadership of our church community to implement this ministry initiative…leaders such as Pat Kishi (front row, left) and Suzanne Westmoreland (back row, right). They are pictured here with members of the Whittier Elementary Parent Teacher Association during the annual volunteer recognition ceremony.
Pat and Suzanne shared a highlight from this past ministry year – how they built meaningful friendships with the members of Whittier Elementary’s PTA Team. By walking alongside the PTA for several months, Pat and Suzanne were able to train and empower their neighbors to run a successful fundraising campaign that would bless many of the school’s students. This is a beautiful example of expanding the table and equipping others to lead lives that reveal God’s goodness.
